Label every box on multiple sides and keep a list of its contents for easy reference.
Seal boxes with packing tape before storing to help protect against dust. Use heavy-duty tape on the bottom of boxes to prevent breaking.
Pack books flat to protect their spines.
Store holiday decorations in their original packaging. Wrap strings of lights around a piece of cardboard for ease of use.
Use smaller boxes for heavy items such as books. When packing heavy items in a large box, place them on the bottom and fill most of the box with light items.
Never store clothing or cloth materials in sealed plastic bags; this may trap moisture in the bags.
STORAGE TIPS
Leave a walkway to the rear of the unit for easy access.
Leave air space between the walls and the contents of the storage unit to promote air circulation.
Place frequently used goods near the door.
Elevate stored goods to protect against moisture. Use pallets, skids or lay plywood sheets on top of 2x4’s.
Be sure your refrigerator or freezer is thoroughly dry and stored with its door slightly ajar.
To help protect against rust, wipe metal surfaces (such as bicycles and tools) with rag dampened with a few drops of machine oil.
Stand mattresses and sofas on end. Place a pallet, corrugated cardboard mat, or plastic sheet on the floor underneath.
Disassemble beds and tables and wrap table legs in paper.
Store mirrors, windows and screens in an upright position-- do not lay them flat.
Consider using shelving to stack items and maximize the vertical space in your unit.
Never store flammable liquids or gases in your storage unit, such as paint, chemicals or equipment filled with gasoline (such as lawnmowers).
Do not store any food items and ensure appliances are clean before storing to prevent rodents or pests.
Protect wood furniture with a wax coat before storage.
